Hostel stays: Fond memories of male nudity among strangers

For those who are interested, here are our members' memories of youth hosteling, and the joys of naked boys on road or rail trips.

Note from Kelly (sunbuns), blog editor: The stories below are from email group exchanges on the YMNA, Young Men's Nudist Association, a Google group.  The longest ones are written by David or atitlan, moderator of the group. I also have written many times about this topic, and find the situations one encounters in hostels to be wonderful ways to get to know people and find out things about oneself in the process. ]

If you wanted to travel when I was a teenager, it was either unaffordable - and lonely - hotel rooms or it was youth hostels, which were cheap and always had people to talk to. I stayed in numerous youth hostels in Britain, Germany, Austria, Italy and Israel. No two were alike.
They might be a 16-bedded farmhouse in the middle of nowhere or a huge city building with dorms each holding 100. A hot shower was a luxury only some offered; at other hostels it might be a cold-water morning wash from a basin. There were chores to be done. At one mountain hostel I had to go out and gather wood so in the evening we could huddle around a welcome fire with only gas lanterns to take us to bed.

A real feeling of camaraderie could build up. Strangers became fast friends, particularly if they met up again at another hostel later on. When I was 17, I hitch-hiked up to Scotland and found myself constantly bumping into a handsome dark-haired French lad of the same age. His name was Thierry and he wanted to be a brain surgeon. One evening I persuaded him and a girl to go for a walk in the forest outside our Scottish castle hostel. I still remember the intense look he gave me and the feeling of his hand on my shoulder but we were not alone, nothing happened and we never met again.

I am not sure why you were told all Americans slept nude because that was not my experience of Americans in youth hostels. I slept nude and so did some of the others in the male dorms but most seemed to wear what we in Britain call y-fronts. These did not hide much when it was time to get up,
with morning erections producing tent poles. Lying on a bottom bunk, I would find it difficult not to laugh when the top bunk occupant clambered down, his tented underwear only inches from my face. I always preferred the top bunk to sleep naked.......

The oddest thing about the dorms was the casual nudity. Because we as strangers got to know each other so quickly, we would carry on conversations in the dorm. I remember in Italy a young cyclist with a pleasant but not handsome face getting undressed while talking to me, only for this ugly duckling to turn into a swan. He was hiding a spectacular swimmer's muscled physique. He then stood there naked and full-frontal until he had finished what he wanted to tell me.
My most eye-popping experience of youth hostel nudity came when I was backpacking around Israel.

I was staying next to the Dead Sea, alone in a long line of
inter-connected communal showers after a sticky day on a bus through the West Bank. Suddenly the shower room was invaded by a dozen American 16 year-olds looking very fit in their white towels. These were quickly discarded and it became clear they
were far more dirty than me, covered in mud from a caving expedition. They were full of excited chatter about the events of the day. I was unsure where to look. With difficulty, I averted my gaze and got back to washing myself.

Until that is I was aware of three of them crowding around and almost touching me. Please could I tell them how to turn the showers on, they had never seen a faucet like these. So I had to give them a demonstration. A testing time!

The attached pictures try to convey some of this. A few of the hostels could be old and basic, like the first photo, others might be more comfortable like the second. The third image illustrates the cameraderie. The fourth an impression of what it was like huddled together in those open showers.

Bring back happy memories. I was very young in the early 70´s - before the interrail - lifting around Europe - living in Youth Hostels! I would love to hear stories from your days meeting guys a bit more simple as today...
Sorry for my English - not my native language ....

Same experience here, Atitlan. I traveled much of Europe via International Youth Hostel Association. In more cases than not, the hostels were reasonably modern with large dorm areas -- a dozen or more sleeping areas in a room. Even those which were older, and re-structured from former usages (large homes, etc.) had shared accommodation with "total strangers". Nudity -- and by that, I mean, non-sexual and comfortable nudity -- was common: changing clothing, sleeping, showering and traveling to-from the showers. Conversations like, "I have 60 Swedish kroner. They're worth just a little more than a French franc. I'm leaving early in the morning on the ferry and won't be able to get to a bank. Do you have enough francs to exchange for me?" were conducted nude, and the exchange made.
Admittedly, this was in the 1960's and 70's. It was definitely a "different time" from today's common "shame in nudity".

Home Exchange and Gay Guest Hosting: An idea whose time has arrived?

I would like to start here a group of people interested on hosting exchange

It's always nice to go to a city and find somebody friendly to host you. That can be the start of a good friendship, or at least it can help you to have a safe place to sleep.

Then when that person come to your place you can offer him same chance to enjoy there.

I live in a little town in Costa Brava, Spain, but my husband's parents own a flat in Barcelona.

We would be interested on visiting some cities such as London, Venice, Rome...

Let's see how this works like.

I am a painter and also do photos. I also work giving sensitive massages.

We are not smoking people, and don't use to drink alcohol, and have never been into drugs.

We like quiet and relaxed life, travelling, going to cinema, etc.

We enjoy nudism and pleasant sex.

I've done it often...most luck I've had hosting/being hosted around the world were on couchsurfing.com and stay4free.com...these are not sexual sites and have a mix of all sexual orientations but usually attract very open minded and friendly people...happy trails.

18 Dec 23:15 Note to artis, the original poster on this topic on Dudesnude.com I've seen your work on Flickr.
There is a site for gay hosting and house exchanges:
http://www.oneworldonefamily.com

I am not sure how well it is really working. I had the condo in Hawaii that I formerly owned listed on
that site for while, but it never got any serious inquiries. But it might be worth a try. It specializes in gay/lesbian house exchanges.

Another site is iTravEx.com It is not free - but no money is actually exchanged. It works on a point system, although you must have a vacation rental property listed on either VRBO or Owner Direct.

P.S. I realize that some DN may have no interest in 'renting' (making money on exchanging your home), but some other people might. I'm sure artis was interested in a free hosting exchange.

Hosting someone you know is one matter - even getting to know someone by inviting them to stay at your home could be great, but arranging to exchange homes with someone I only met on a website would require much more safeguarding. I do not want to send off my house keys to somebody on the other side an ocean whom I had never met in person (or by telephone) -- if there is not some assurance that everything is legitmate (and I'm sure it works both ways).
A vacation home broker or housing exchange broker or hosting agent would certainly add a sense of security and could make things work smoother (and reduce risks).

So take these as suggestions with that idea in mind. I don't claim that it's a solution, however, I have used with pretty good success such vacation home rental listing services at: VRBO.com and HomeAway.com. So when I found out about iTravex.com I was pretty interested.

ITravex is not a GLBT vacation rental agent (but might be gay friendly) - it is only a broker or site that links up people (host and guest). Actually, it is only available to vacation home owners, but if someone has a place (especially in or near a big city or resort area) that is available for holiday and vacation rentals and can also hosting or housing exchanges for a least part of the year, then you could become a member of iTravex by listing your property on OwnerDirect.com (or with VRBO.com which does cost).

Your home does not have to be actually rented (because YOU always decide whom, when, and under what conditions someone will use your home (second/vacation home). Owner Direct is not the largest vacation rental property listing site (VRBO and the HomeAway sites are the largest and that is why they charge $150-$199 a year). Also, there is no guarantee, people will inquire, but at least, using such a site legitimizes your 'renting' or 'exchanging' your property.

There is no upfront cost for listing on OwnerDirect but you do have to pay a commission (10%) from the rentals.
The way iTravEx works is it allows members to use your earned or purchased iTravEx points to rent a vacation home or apartment. The 'host' (owner) earns these points by letting members 'rent'. There is no actual exchange of money. The point is you don't have to exchange between the two same homeowners - each one can ask to be hosted at any property (as long as the dates, conditions, and points can be negotiated).

My point is I could see how some people here on Dudenude (and a myriad of other gay social networking sites) could actually use iTravex as the kind of 'home exchange' broker/agent.
By the way, some sites such as VRBO (although they cost money annually) allow the adding of such categories for your property as 'clothing optional' and 'alternative lifestyle'.

To be honest, I've had a couple of inquiries from members of iTravex, but no one has actually exchanged home yet.

There are nowadays several iPhone apps where gay men can find places to stay at private residences through the shared accommodation model.   I've thrown in the names too of several other types of gay-specific travel apps.

Gran Canaria: Gay sunshine mecca in The Canary Islands of Spain

I go every year to Gran Canaria in March (this year in May was my 7th trip). So when asked to give some advice about flights or accommodations there I wrote the following:

The pics show me naked out in the Maspalomas Dunes, which can be reached on foot from the Playa del Ingles beach or by walking back from the shoreline toward central Playa del Ingles (town).  The major gay nightlife is usually found in and around the Yumbo Center, a large 4-story shopping complex, with numerous restaurants, souvenirs shops, fashion stores, etc. It becomes the local gay mecca sometimes after 11pm each night and is active until 3-4am. There are also sex clubs located within the Yumbo, mostly on the ground floor level, mixed in with the gay bars, several which have drag shows and strip shows.
You can sometimes find good bargains for flights and hotels to Gran Canaria on the major travel booking sites, but not always the most popular ones, like Orbitz, Yahoo Travel, or Expedia.

Instead take at look at:
http://www.alpharooms.com
http://www.booking.com

Alpharooms also has flights with hotel stay plans that can be quite cheap, although I have found it usually cheaper to book them separately. But it is worth checking out if you are coming from a major European city.

Koka: The place that has been fairly nice (a small studio apt with kitchen and balcony or direct access to the pool), it's cheap (in March usually $30-$40 a night) and also not too far from the beach or to the Yumbo (gay nightlife) is:

Apartamentos Koka,
Avenida de Tenerife, 17 35100 Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Palmas, Spain Tel 928 76 16 17

(I just checked these sites for possible booking for next March, the Koka is already fully booked. So you may find the same is true for your stay).

However, there are dozens of similar apartamentos hotels, like the Koka, some with room and board plans. In fact, some may be closer to where you want to be. I suggest staying with walking distance of the Yumbo Center since you'll inevitably end of there late at night (there are taxis, of course) to more outlying areas (which are nicer and more expensive).

It all depends on what you want or need out your vacation.
I prefer to stay cheaply since I am usually not in the room at all except to sleep and sometimes cook my own meals. There are plenty of restaurants, of course. But the typical place in Gran Canaria has only the basic food (rather unhealthy too). So I prefer to save my money for splurging on gourmet meals in other larger cities in Spain and elsewhere in Europe.

Note too that there is a city bus from the airport (LPA) that runs through Playa del Ingles and onward to the Lighthouse tower near the beach in the actual town of Maspalomas.
In the two cities blend together and even the locals confuse the two locales. It's better to know the street names and have a map or the address of the hotel before you arrive.
I got off at the wrong place once and had a long walk with a suitcase before I found it (or a taxi).

P.S. There are a few exclusively gay hotels, but I prefer the 'straight' ones -- just because the services are the same but the clientele is not. Gay men can be snobby and even act condescending (especially some gay couples on vacation). At least the straight people will either be friendly or just plain ignore you. Besides, you have to pay premium prices for gay hotel (clothing optional or not). You're just as well off to be naked on the beach and in the dunes all day and then stay clothed at your place of accommodation.

The Basement Studios is a gay hotel, but they also allow day and evening guest from outside, especially for their Wed night sex party. The Cellar (gay nude bar) is open nightly from 10:30 ish until late.
